Expected Returns in a Traditional Balanced Portfolio

With relatively high valuations in most asset classes today, expected returns in a traditional balanced portfolio are trending below historic levels. Many investors are looking to alternative investments as an additional source of return, as they offer more compelling diversification properties. Alternatives are forecast to grow by 12 per cent to reach USD23 trillion by 2026 – see Figure 1. Private equity (PE), already the largest segment within alternatives, represents close to 40 per cent of total assets under management and is expected to represent nearly half by 2026.
